Rock’n roll singer set for concert: Elvis Presley To Entertain

This story is from April 1, 1960

April Fools’ Day- it’s that good old day today, so don’t believe anything you read. This is particular true of the things you may read in this Maroon.

It’s all in fun and The Maroon sincerely hopes that no one will be offended. We’ve lampooned quite a few students and of course some of the faculty members in today’s issue of The Maroon. It’s all in fun and we hope you like it.

The College of Music and the Pegasus Poetry Society will co-sponsor a concert featuring the rock ‘n’ roll talents of Elvis Presley next Friday at 8 p.m. in Marquette Auditorium.

The Rev. C.J. McNaspy S.J. dean of the college of music, said that the concert will be held in Marquette Auditorium instead of the Fieldhouse because the audience will be limited to the administration, music faculty and prominent cultured New Orleanians. APO service fraternity and a small squad from

the New Orleans police department will serve as ushers, and also help to defend Presley from unruly mobs of coeds who might try to crash uninvited into the auditorium.

“We feel this event is the high point in Loyola’s cultural activity this year,” Frank Canatella, Pegasus president explained. “An added feature on the program will be the premiere performance by Elvis of a rockin’ number to which Father McNaspy composed the music and I supplied the words.

“I call it ‘Opus 4 in C Natural for Guitar and Vocal’,” he said.

The concert will be the first appearance by Presley since his discharge from the army several weeks ago.

Music will be supplied by the Seventeen Souls, an all string campus group consisting of 14 harps, two upright pianos and a clavichord.

Tickets are $10 and dress is strictly formal.
