Senate supports ban on tweeting

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) – Louisiana’s state senators want drivers to stop tweeting and posting to Facebook and put their hands on the wheel.

The Senate voted 25-9 Wednesday for a proposal to ban social media posts while driving. The bill would expand an existing prohibition on texting while driving to include accessing, reading and posting to sites like Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Republican Sen. Dale Erdey of Livingston said his proposal is designed to combat distracted driving. He said posting often takes longer than texting.

The bill heads next to the House for debate.

If passed into law, violators would face a traffic fine of up to $175 for the first offense and up to $500 for second and subsequent violations.
