What could be better than an all-access pass into the hottest sporting events in New Orleans for free?
As if the packed streetcars didn’t give it away, New Orleans was recently the host of the 2012 NCAA Men’s Final Four. Downtown was crowded with fans from across the country.
While it may have seemed fun for those who had tickets to the games, many students were frustrated. It seemed that amount the hoopla, they barely had a chance to see any of the action firsthand.
The Greater New Orleans Sports Foundation did its part to let students in on the fun. The organization, which will bring Superbowl 2013 and NCAA Women’s Final Four 2013 to New Orleans, is taking volunteers.
“Over the next two years, we’ll be recruiting over 8,000 volunteers as we build up to Super Bowl XLVII,” the foundation’s website announced. “We could not host any of these great events without our wonderful volunteers.”
Stew Krane, the volunteer coordinator for the foundation, says that student volunteers are in high demand.
“We really like having younger volunteers,” Krane said. “They can bring a lot of energy.”
The sports business is booming in New Orleans.
The city is no longer catering only to Mardi Gras enthusiasts, but to sports fanatics as well.
Students have the chance to volunteer with the foundation and be at the center of the excitement.
Volunteers for the Superbowl would be stationed to help with many aspects of the event. Students looking for community service hours could also benefit from this experience.
“If there are students who need volunteer hours, we’d be happy to provide that,” Krane said.

Volunteering could be a sure- fire way to be a part of the city’s biggest attractions while having a great time.
“College students get really into it,” Krane said. “They make for a great experience.”
