The university provides a number of resources to help make the lives of students easier. Be it renting out cars, bikes and e-readers, or helping with career services, Loyola has your back.
CAREER DEVELOPMENT CENTER
The Career Development Center is located on the second floor of the Danna Center. The center’s staff can assist students in choosing a major, finding an internship and drafting resumes and cover letters. They also provide help with learning about the job search process and networking strategies, writing personal statements and resumes for graduate schools. Also, students are provided with resources where they can practice interview skills and discuss the best way to spend a gap year. Loyola students can make one-on-one appointments with career coaches by making an appointment with the office. Walk-in hours are available on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from 2 to 4 p.m. On the center’s website, students can find useful information about job postings, internship positions, on-campus interviews, career fairs and other services.
KINDLE E-BOOK READER
Kindle E-Book Readers are available at the Monroe Library. These Kindles come readily loaded with several classical novels, poetry collections and plays. Some of the available reading material includes: “Waiting for Godot” by Samuel Beckett, “Death of a Salesman” by Arthur Miller, “Uncle Vanya” by Anton Chekhov, “Animal Farm” by George Orwell, “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri, “The Jungle” by Upton Sinclair, “Summa Theologica I-II” by St. Thomas Aquinas and “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Bronte. Students may rent them using their Student IDs. Late fees are $5 per day. The replacement fee is $140, and the maximum fee is $170. Students can also request special materials they would like added to the Kindle.
WECAR
Loyola offers three Toyota Priuses for students, faculty and staff looking to rent a car for hourly, daily or overnight use. The rentals are available through WeCar, a car-sharing program sponsored by Enterprise Rent-A-Car. To rent one of the cars, interested parties must become a member on the WeCar website. The one-time application fee for the program is waived, and the annual membership fee is $35. The hourly rate is $10 with fuel included. The daily rate is $60 and the overnight rate (6 p.m. to 8 a.m.) is $30. The cars are located on the fourth floor of the Freret Street Garage. There are plans to add an electric car in the near future. For more information, contact Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs Robert Reed, who coordinates the program for the university.
IGGY BIKES
At the beginning of each semester, students can email Joe Deegan, Loyola University Community Action Program adviser and Loyola fellow for Justice and Service, and set up an appointment to rent an Iggy bike. The bikes are Worksman Industrial Cycles, quite popular in Europe. They are single speed, have an 18-inch frame and come with a helmet, basket and bike lock. The typical fee per semester is $30 with a $20 deposit and a signed agreement stating that the bike will only be used for lawful purposes and will be ridden only during daylight. If a student fails to return the bike or if the bike is stolen, the student’s account is fined $350. Any interested students should contact Joe Deegan at [email protected].
