Volleyball works to repeat winning season

Preseason practices have begun for Loyola University’s women’s volleyball team as they gear up for their next chance to take the Southern States Athletic Conference title.

The Wolfpack took second place in the SSAC’s Western conference, and held the most wins since 2007 in the 2010-2011 season, with a record of 25–14. With no graduating seniors and at least four new freshmen joining the team, the Loyola volleyball program has high hopes for the upcoming season.

The program is striving to progress further into the conference by working on avoiding injuries, deepening the roster and working on strengthening fundamentals, according to Coach Tommy Harold.

“We are also working on strengthening the team’s dynamic,” said Kaki Johnson, defensive player and philosophy senior.

The girls’ team is getting excited for the upcoming season, Harold said. Right now the team is scrimmaging, mixing up teams and keeping track of who is winning – ultimately, testing which women are earning their keep as starters.

Harold said, “The spring is a great time to work on skills, though often when we start to see progress, it is time to ship the players off for summer.”

Preseason practices will halt in May and begin again in August. “I am looking forward to having a fun season, since it’ll be my last,” said Johnson. “I just want to play my best and make memories with the girls.”
