Loyola’s next university president will be a layperson, according to an email sent out by Dennis Cuneo, chairman of the presidential search committee.

While the board has not shared the identities of the remaining candidates, the final three are all non-Jesuits. Cuneo called this decision “consistent with current trends and demographics in higher education.” Of the 28 colleges in the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, 15 have a non-Jesuit as president. Loyola University New Orleans is now set to be the 16th.

“Together, we have sought high-level operational experience, a strong vision for Loyola, and a strong commitment to the Catholic faith and Jesuit mission,” Cuneo said in the email.

This week, representatives from faculty, staff, administration, alumni and student populations will meet with the final three candidates for interviews. Representatives will provide feedback to the Presidential Search Committee and the Board of Trustees.

“Ultimately, the final decision in selecting our next university president rests solely with the Loyola University New Orleans Board of Trustees,” Cuneo said in the email.

The board expects to name the new president no later than May, with a start date in June or July.
