Canada elects new leader after a decade

Justin Trudeau, Liberal party, won by a clear majority in Canada’s general election on Monday, Oct. 19.

“This is what positive politics can do,” Trudeau told supporters in Ottawa on Tuesday.

Incumbent Prime Minster Stephen Harper, Conservative party, has been in office since February 2006. Trudeau’s victory denies Harper’s attempt at a fourth term.

Harper will resign as leader of the Conservative party but said he will remain in parliament.

“The people of Canada have elected a Liberal government, which we accept without hesitation,” Harper said to the media.
