Bragging rights and championship t-shirts will be on the line this semester as Loyola students will compete against each other in three intramural sports.

The three scheduled sports are softball, basketball and soccer. These will be available to all Loyola students. In addition to the pride of winning the championship shirt, there will be an opportunity for the top teams in basketball and softball to compete in the Louisiana Collegiate Intramural Sports Association's state championship each year.

In addition to participating, students will also have the option of officiating intramural sports. All officials will be paid for their efforts and clinics for officials will be held at the recreational sports complex. All interested student should check Loyola's Web site for updates on times and dates of the clinics.

Though intramural sports may not receive the attention that is given to Loyola's varsity sports, students consistently seem to enjoy the opportunity to take part in the competition. Urban Martinez, general studies business junior, participated on his high school wrestling team and said that playing intramural sports in past semesters was "a time to be back in a competitive nature that I haven't gotten into since high school".

Physics freshman Nick Vasquez also reflected positively on his intramural experience last fall, but also expressed some concern about occasional lapses in organization.

"I've seen them fall through on things," he said, referring to one instance where his flag football game had been rescheduled the night before game day.

Aside from the issues with last minute changes to the schedule, Vasquez had no other major complaints.

"I love intramurals,” Vasquez said. “It’s just another way to show off how much better I am than everybody else."
