Loyola's Interfraternity Council, which governs three fraternities on campus, is hoping to offer a fourth fraternity to men who go through recruitment during spring 2013.
The Office of Co-Curricular Programs has appointed a committee to review expansion packets sent to Loyola from various national fraternities. Just before Thanksgiving break, the group of nine was narrowed to three.
Assistant director of student leadership for the Office of Co- Curricular Programs Jenna Vercillo said the criteria to select the new on-campus organization is standard, including the fraternities' views on "policies and programs, colonization and chartering, alumni relations and national support." Vercillo said she and the rest of the expansion committee looked for groups who "took time to consider the unique campus environment." The three remaining fraternities will give presentations at Loyola before the end of the fall semester, explaining how their colony will run and how they plan to integrate into the Greek community.
The first organization to visit Loyola was the Pi Kappa Phi . or Pi Kapp, fraternity on Dec. 5. Pi Kapp was founded at the College of Charleston on Dec. 10, 1904.
Beta Theta Pi visited Loyola yesterday. Beta was founded on Aug. 8, 1839 in Oxford, Ohio.
Phi Gamma Delta, or FIJI, will visit Loyola on Dec. 12. FIJI was founded on May 1, 1848 at Jefferson College.
After the committee reviews each presentation, they will finalize their choice, and the vice president of Student Affairs, M.L. Petty, will make the final decision. Loyola's Interfraternity Council hopes to have a decision by the beginning of formal recruitment on Jan. 23, 2013. The presentations are open to the Loyola community and feedback will be reviewed
when making the decision. For more information, join the Loyola Interfraternity Council's Facebook page.
Vercillo and the Office of Co- Curricular Programs hope that the increase of academic excellence, philanthropy and community outreach will have a positive image for Pi Kapp, Beta or FIJI adding to the strong brotherhoods Loyola already fosters.
