Michael Morin, SGA vice presidential candidate, often watches New Orleans City Council meetings on television — not for the content, he’s quick to point out, but to see how they’re run.
As the sole candidate running for vice president, Morin, a music education sophomore, may not have to worry about competition, but if elected, he will have to lead the SGA senate meetings.
According to Morin, the idea to run for vice president originated over the summer, during a conversation about Jesuit ideals.
“The one that struck me was giving yourself to others,” he said. “And I was like, ‘How can I do that?’”
Morin has served on SGA since starting at Loyola, first as a college senator, and now as the college president for the College of Music and Fine Arts.
As vice president, Morin said he hopes to increase SGA’s visibility on campus.
“(To a lot of students) it seems like SGA is an elitist club,” he said.
Morin, however, said he wants to change that. He plans on promoting SGA more, through flyers and more town hall meetings. He also hopes to have open forums at the beginning of every senate meeting to allow students to voice their opinions. Although the meetings currently have time for that, it is at the end of the meeting, he said.
“A lot of students don’t want to sit through an entire senate meeting,” Morin said.
Morin said he also wants to encourage senators to reach out to student organizations more. He pointed to his own experience attending meetings for AIGA, a professional association for graphic design. Through that, Morin found out graphic design students were not able to stay in the graphic design lab past midnight. He was able to work with the university to allow the students to get in after the building closed by flashing their student IDs.
“Being more proactive is something I really want to push,” he said.
Morin emphasized the importance of SGA representatives reaching out to students.
“There’s been a lot of progress in communication between SGA and the students, but there needs to be a positive relationship,” he said. “There are more things that need to be done.”
