Drew Brees not good for graduation

Undisputed Truth

Undisputed Truth

I’m imagining my graduation day. The birds are singing, cameras are flashing, parents are clapping and, most importantly and God willing, nobody along the lines of Drew Brees is giving my commencement speech.

It’s not that I don’t respect Brees for what he’s done; bringing the Saints to the Super Bowl and winning is no small feat. This alone, however, does not qualify him to send forth a generation of Loyola graduates on graduation day.

Some have argued that Brees came to the Saints out of the goodness of his heart, that he could have signed with a lot of other, better teams than the Saints at the time, and that this makes him a good New Orleans role model; but the fact of the matter is that Drew Brees came to the Saints only because the Chargers and the Dolphins wouldn’t pay him enough.

And speaking of pay, word is that the university is coughing up an ungodly amount of dough to compensate Brees for speaking for, what, five minutes? I’m fairly sure that for much less money, Loyola could have gotten someone far more qualified, inspirational and academically relevant to speak to this year’s graduates.

To put it into perspective, I am from Alabama. I am proud of the Saints for what they’ve done, they have made a fan out of me, but I do not let them control my life, particularly in an educational aspect. This is pretty typical of most non-Louisiana residents at Loyola, which means that I have no doubt that there are a lot of disappointed graduates-to-be that are wishing a commencement speaker had been picked that is known for doing something other than just sports.

After all, any Colts fans in the audience will pretty much have to grin and bear it, which is somewhat unfair to do to them on one of the most important days of their lives.

To back all of this up, I have prepared a short list of commencement speaking candidates that would be a better choice than Drew Brees: Ellen DeGeneres (hats off to you, Tulane), James Patterson, John Goodman, Buddy Guy, Eli Manning (better than Brees because he is actually from New Orleans), Tyler Perry, Richard Simmons (you know you’d love it) and Mitch Landrieu, and these are just the people I could think of with some tie to New Orleans that have accomplished anything related to any of Loyola’s offered majors. These people would even contribute to the goal that Loyola might have in mind with Brees, which is the goal of getting a little national publicity.

It is not to say that this goal is a bad one — publicity is always a good thing — but it isn’t too much to say that a better speaker for the graduates could have been selected, particularly one who wouldn’t have to read from a script written by a publicist and whose main source of inspiration will probably start with, “Who Dat.”

I understand the home team pride, but it is a bit extreme to depend on that pride to inspire an audience of scattered fans at best.

This article is pretty disgusting. How spoiled are you to expect a speaker better than Drew Brees? You would have hated the speaker at my husband's Loyola commencement. She was a businesswoman. Newsflash: commencement isn’t about the speaker.

I graduated from Loyola in 97, and I have not a clue who our speaker was. Drew Brees is a dream speaker....totally inspirational story and a seemingly stand up man with great values. Richard Simmons? I'm sure it's tough growing up gay in Alabama, but you don't have to hate on Brees like dat.....bitch.

Drew Brees has done more for the City of New Orleans then any of your proposed speakers... combined.

You obviously put Eli Manning as a joke and have no real sense for what you just lived through. Who cares that Eli Manning was born here. Thats the dumbest argument I have ever heard.

95% of the graduating seniors love that Drew Brees is speaking at their graduation and you are the Debby downer that complained about it. You really should be ashamed of yourself. Talk about selfish. Richard Simmons over Drew Brees... wow... you officially can never be taken seriously ever again.

The Saints winning the super bowl will go down in Louisiana History... not just sports or nfl history. Kids will read about this for years to come.

Simply put... your article is horrible. The Maroon has really lowered its standards the past few years if they are allowing this junk to be printed.

Stupidest thing I've ever read. Well, maybe I've read stupider things, but a more stupid argument against a guest speaker, I have not. The author writes as though Drew Brees is all jock and no brain, will embarrass himself and Loyola with nothing more rah rah who dat! noise. Preposterous. You don't even the know the subject for which you are arguing against..

Honestly, to offer the names you have as replacements destroys your argument completely.

Columnists are supposed to do at least the minimum amount of research before they are allowed to go to print...right? San Diego pushed him out the door, Miami did not believe that his shoulder would recover properly and thus he came to New Orleans. I hope you are not majoring in journalism, Chad. Or modeling....I recommend bathing at LEAST once every two days. D Bag.

How can you argue that Drew Brees is not a suitable speaker for graduation, while proposing that Richard Simmons is a better choice? What more has he done in comparison to Drew Brees to exemplify Jesuit values? Honestly, you shouldn't have written this article if your intention was to degrade one of the most loved figures of this city by saying an over-energetic, shortie-short wearing exercise guru would be a better commencement speaker. Please find something better to put in this paper.

I'm a Senior and was first ecstatic when I found out that Drew Brees would be speaking at my graduation. Now that the administration has announced this to the city and has followed this announcement with not requiring tickets, I am afraid that there will be a flock of people attending who don't care about Loyola or any of the graduates. I'm sure Mr. Brees will be very inspirational, whether he wrote his speech or not. I'm just afraid that the cheering of "Who Dat!" will be so loud I can't hear it.

I realize that this editorial is just meant to be provocative ramblings of an adolescent, but I will take the bait and just make sure the Brees' record is clear. Since its founding in 2003, the Drew Brees Dream has committed more than $4,500,000 to charitable causes and academic institutions in the New Orleans, San Diego and West Lafayette/Purdue communities. At Loyola we learn about the Jesuit values and attitudes of heart, and Brees exhibits a lot of them: promotion of the common good, pursuit of excellence...compassion, generosity, gratitude, HOPE (ring any bells? if not, introduce yourself to Fr. Fagin ASAP). I would hope the writer wouldn't be so closed-minded as to think that there are speakers from whom he can't learn anything. Everyone has a story and a message and a special path they have chosen to take, and we learn from them when we listen.

Really? This cannot be serious. At least you'll remember who spoke at your graduation. This was quite possibly the most useless article I have read in quite some time, and I read The Times Picayune! Count your blessings, you lucky maggot.

so he's known for "just sports" ( a B.S. contention but let's give it to you)...but these people who are known for "just" movies or just tv or just stand up comedy are somehow better? Did you venture off the loyola campus at all, read a paper or watch a local tv station during your tenure here? Drew Brees' (like the Saints')influence on the city is more than "just sports." Either you have writer's block or are just don's have a clue.

This is a joke, right? You can't really have this strong of an opinion about who speaks at your graduation when arguably the most popular man in New Orleans is the selection?
I had some random guy I can't even remember speak at my college graduation. I turned out OK.

I love the know-it-all attitude new graduates have. I can't wait for you to look back in a few years and go "wow, I was an idiot then, i really thought i knew it all."

Wah wah... I'm at Tulane and I will gladly trade you Brees for one called Anderson Cooper. You don't know how lucky you are buddy.

While it is true that the New Orleans Saints organization probably did make the most lucrative offer, you need to realize that Drew Brees's decision to sign was about much more than that. Obviously you did not do any research or are simply a hater of sports figures in general. While unfortunately hidden in the sports sections of news papers and sports media, Drew Brees has accomplished so much more in New Orleans than any other person you suggested. He has been a community leader and done far more than you could ever obviously fathom. He has lead from the front in his off field efforts to help the city of New Orleans. Do some actual research and make a valid point next time. You might have struck a positive cord with some, if you had offered a more viable candidate like Harry Connick, Jr.. Of course, even he is awestruck by what Drew Brees has done for the city off the field!!!
