Walter Block On the Record

It seems that everyone and his uncle (Would it be more politically correct to say "aunt" here, instead? Yes. Tough.) are now feminists. This, alone, would constitute good reason if not to reject this stance outright, then at least to be highly suspicious of it. Most people — how shall I say this delicately — have an IQ akin to comfortable room temperature. If they favor something — anything — it is probably immoral, fallacious and wrong-headed. In the case of feminism, this is true in spades.

Let us start off with a minor annoyance foisted upon us by these harridans: their attack on the English language. It is no longer allowed in polite society to refer to a woman as "Miss" or "Mrs." Now, it would appear, we are all required to utilize the horrid word "Ms." But the first two convey important information: marital status. Why should we jettison knowledge about a woman's status in this regard just to satisfy a bunch of loud-mouthed people? And don't even get me started on "he or she," "she and he," "she" alone, or "s/he." Normal people can no longer read the language without constantly having their noses thrust into this sort of imbecility.

Now for some more serious concerns.

Feminists are typically socialists, communists, liberals or, ugh, "progressives." This is pretty downright despicable since these attacks on economic freedom create the very poverty against which they presume to inveigh. Have we learned nothing from the natural experiments of East and West Germany? North and South Korea? Why do these people want to condemn us to lives of penury?

They learn nothing from our history, which bears eloquent testimony to the fact that socialism simply does not work. Socialism ruins whatever it touches, not only abroad, but domestically too, as in the cases of socialized medicine, the welfare system (which breaks up families) and social "security" (which reduces intergenerational ties). Feminists are invincibly ignorant, too, regarding the economic functioning of minimum wage laws, unionism, rent control, tariffs, taxes, central planning, etc.

Feminists oppose arming women. When confronted with the scourge of rape and molestation, feminists respond by holding "Take Back the Night" marches, whining about how horrid these attacks are. Of course they are! But why not encourage young women to avail themselves of their Second Amendment rights to bear arms? The gun is the great equalizer. Face it: unarmed women are at a disadvantage vis-a-vis rapists, who are usually bigger, stronger and heavier than they are. With a pistol in their pocketbooks (sorry, I can't help my stereotyping; I relish it) they confront their attackers on an equal basis.

There is a wealth of empirical evidence, as well as common sense, attesting women known to be well armed are safer. Pistol and rifle target shooting is an Olympic event. Why don't universities have girls' (there I go again) teams in these sports? But wait: there is one benefit to "Take Back the Night" marches, and I do want to be fair: whenever rapists contemplate these events, they keel over in laughter. They are laughing so uproariously that at least during these times they are incapable of raping anyone.

In the view of most feminists, capitalism is to blame for the wage gap of some 25 to 30 percent. They claim that "sexism" is responsible for the fact that men earn more than women on average. Not at all. This is due in large part, instead, to the economic doctrine of alternative costs: whenever you do anything, you do it at the cost of not being able to do something else as well as you otherwise might have been able to do. Women bear a disproportionate share of housework. Stipulating that they are otherwise equally productive to men, this alone would account for a large share of the so-called wage "gap."

Feminists will undoubtedly interpret the foregoing as evidence that I hate women. Nonsense. Some of my best friends are women. I admire many women. I do not at all mean to put down the distaff side; very much the opposite. I wish to rid our better halves of this virus that inflicts them: feminism.

How on earth you became a professor of anything is a great mystery to me.

Congrats. Your absurdity used in order to capture an audience has failed- an any other attempt you may have for implementing the Austrian school at Loyola. Bravo. Bravo...

Women, man (or as the feminazis would say, "women, women", amirite?), they really bum me out! Getting all hoity-toity and requesting that we address them by their preferred honorific! Wanting us to change up pronouns that have been used for hundreds of years in God's chosen language, English! And disrespecting God's chosen people, dudes!

Fortunately, feminists are easily identified, and as such can be more easily targeted and discounted. As indoctrinated by the trademarked group Feminists, Inc., they make themselves known by their forked tongues, war paint, and homogenous political ideology ("Pinkoism'). History has proven (proven!) that socialism never works, not ever, not even that one time, not even for your one friend who got that shoulder surgery while abroad; and that the American capitalist society is perfection sent from above, in the name of Reagan, Rand (disremember her atheism, she is afflicted with The Lady), Hayek, and Civil War reenactments, amen. Oh! And to add to that, every social movement ever should first and foremost have a strong foundation in being economically efficient above all else (Libertarianism 101, people!), amen again.

Feminists, listen! The rapists are laughing at you! Laughing! I feel we should put a lot of stock into what rapists think, as well as murderers and arsonists, as they surely would not commit their crimes without a point in mind! Perhaps if your IQ were to "warm up" a smidge, you'd think a bit more of the Babies AND the Rapists.

Back to my clever quip about IQs- irrefutably, the mean IQ of "most people" is that of a comfortable room temperature, (I prefer a brisk 68.5 while penning my epistles from my glass-bottomed office), despite the fact that the mean is always adjusted to 100. Behold my powerful bending of numbers! My wit! My testicles! (Also my PhD in economics)

Listen, ladies, I'm a nice guy. Think about it. And make me a sandwich.

Men Suck
Tue Mar 13 2012 01:44
Does no one recognize our struggles?! Men have continued to enslave women and turn us into 2nd class citizens. EVEN THE BLACKS HAD MORE RIGHTS THAN US!!! If you put a woman in power, the world will change. No more crime, poverty, or war!

I have yet to meet a feminist I don't vehemently dislike being around. The ones I've interacted with in my lifetime have almost all been bitter and mean-spirited, living their daily lives with the daily goal of proving their worth. I'm quite sure others feel the same way about some feminists, and it appears the feminist movement understands that some of its members invoke this type of reaction from outsiders. This is often addressed by stating that men are 'threatened' by the power of these women. Knowing fully that some men are in fact threatened, I'd simply say that if the bitterness and vile demeanor were to be relaxed a bit, I think feminism would prosper. Until then, feel free to point out how this does not apply to all feminists. I made a solid attempt to avoid blanket statements.

First and foremost, all of the females here saying that men are scared of feminism because of "women's power to rule the world", and that "this is so mean" need to cease, it's really not helping your case. To the person saying it was a satire-- take a block class, it is not a satire.

That being said, the one thing block misses is that while being a "feminist" by his standards may be detrimental to society, being a chauvinist isn't much better.

The segment on rape is just flat out retarded (for lack of a better word), just like one of his most popular arguments that privatizing roads would lead to people not driving drunk. Illogical and completely unfounded.

While pompous and arrogant in some senses, however, this professor has proved himself to be a worthwhile investment. If you ever have the opportunity to take a Block class, I would highly recommend it. If anything, he really sharpens your debate skills, and immerses you into a world full of different outlooks and opinions such as this article.

Dr. Block, I would love to hear what you have to say about the statistics that clearly portray:
-25% of women will be raped or sexually assaulted within their lifetime.
-44% of these victims are under the age of 18 (and could not buy a gun even if they were interested).
AND MOST IMPORTANTLY
-2/3 of perpetrators are known by the victim
THEREFORE, your argument that women should carry guns to deter rape only suggests that women should kill not only strangers, but acquaintances, friends, boyfriends, and husbands.

If men are so much stronger than women (as you point out), then those men can easily take that gun away from the woman holding it, allowing them not only to rape but to murder (how many women would really want to bring a gun to the table in that situation?)

On the note that "Take Back the Night" marches are ineffective, you are not considering the solidarity that comes to survivors in such a safe and open group of people. You have clearly never been to the open speaker section that follows the march to listen to all of the incredible and strong people who speak about their victimization and provide hope to others who have yet to deal with the physical and psychological damage that rape induces.

You clearly know how to research, I suggest you gather some quantitative and qualitative data surrounding the issue of rape.

This isn't a satire. You can read many of his published works where he conveys the same ideas. It's definitely not a satire. He's serious.

The President of Loyola actually commented on this guy's rant, saying that while the university is a place for free expression, he would have given Block an F on this paper for lack of argument and assertions without evidence. Lol, it must hurt to know your boss would fail you if you were in his class...and for failing to conform to the standards of academic excellence!

The institution of Loyola University must be ashamed to have a professor on its faculty with such draconian views. He must be a tenured faculty member, what else could explain his continued employment. He says he has women friends. I find it hard to believe someone with such a closed mind has any friends.

He starts off making a completely misguided statement, everyone is a feminist. Actually, the conservative movement has quite skillfully demonized that word (much like they did with "liberal"). Many people who hold feminist values don't call themselves feminist for that reason.

This guy is a right wing moron not really worthy of consideration. He says "socialism ruins whatever it touches." Hmm....seems like Social Security and Medicare work just fine. If socialized medicine was such a horror, why has not a single democratic country that has adopted it voted to switch to an American style privatized system. Doesn't seem like satire to me. Seems like right wing garbage that would be right at home with Rush Limbaugh, Red State.com, etc.

Hard to find a better example of the "straw man" fallacy than this article. He makes many assertions about feminists that are simply untrue and then attacks them. I would enjoy being in his class to argue with him, because he clearly isn't too bright and it would be fun to expose that to his students.

DOWN WITH BLOCK!
Thu Mar 8 2012 00:01
I am a woman and I am deeply offended with what Dr. Block has to say. This is the reason our civilization cannot progress. MEN ARE AFRAID OF OUR POWER!! Woman have the power to create life and men are jealous and frightened of us. Men therefore keep us under oppression. WELL NO MORE!!! UNITE WOMEN OF LOYOLA AND EVERYWHERE ELSE!! DOWN WITH THE PATRIARCHY AND UP WITH THE MATRIARCHY!!! Let us put these brutes in high heels and force them to wear make up. It is our time now! We are in charge now not ignorant, abusive, rapist men!

If you want to keep using Miss & Mrs. you should then be advocating the addition of equivalent titles for men. To keep the system as it is is just blatantly sexist, behaving as if somehow a woman's marriage status is more important than a man's, which implies that it's okay for men to cheat on their wives but not women.

Honestly.. I am NOT an anti-feminist, but you got to give him credit. Look at all of you, so worked up over this article (with reason). That's what his intention was incase you haven't noticed - to get people talking. And he did this exceptionally well. I defend it, not because I support what it says, but because it promotes freedom of speech which many of us forget we have the right to do. So no, I don't think he deserves to have his tenure removed and even less - to be fired. We all have the right to say what we want. If you feel so strongly about it, write a response argument with EVIDENCE.. I'm sure it would really impress him. I think that's what he sought out to do with this anyways. To get a reaction.

Anonymous says ...Before you post any more comments, go back down and read where I said it's satire.
It's a stupid column, not well written, BUT BLOCK ISN'T SERIOUS.
"Nonsense. Some of my best friends are women."
That should have tipped all of you off.

ACTUALLY THAT IS WHERE YOU ARE WRONG... HE IS SERIOUS.

He sounds like the Rush Limbaugh of Loyola law school. He may as well just get down to it and refer to anyone he disagrees with as a "slut". It would be a lot easier than cogent analysis of the issues.
The fact that he's decided not to debate a "feminist" reveals his true cowardice.
