To me, Greek life is about more than your brothers or sisters, chapter or looking good while wearing your letters. It’s about being a part of a large community of other Greek organizations.
Greek life is fun; it’s an opportunity to meet different people whom you might not have met otherwise.
Even going through sorority or fraternity recruitment is a great experience to meet other men and women. Joining Greek life also gives people an opportunity to make a difference in your chapter, your organization, Loyola and the greater community.
When people think of the Greeks, a common misconception may be, “Oh, its just stupid kids who pay for their friends.” First of all, we are required to maintain a certain GPA to remain in our respective chapters, and second, many Greeks are friends with non-Greeks.
The Greek organizations also adhere to a set of standards not only set by their own organizations but also ones set by the university.
Everyone has a unique experience with the Greek system, but my personal experience of being a part of a sorority has meant being apart of a sisterhood that words cannot describe.
During sorority recruitment, so many of my sisters talk about “the bond” that we have, and it is true. We have a bond and it’s hard to describe, but once you experience it, you never forget that feeling.
My sorority sisters are part of my New Orleans family. Like everyone, I have family I never see in the form of other chapters, but know that if I call them they are there for me. I also have my blood family, and I don’t always get along with them, but I love them and they are there when I really need it, much like my sorority sisters.
I don’t know if Greek life has changed me and who I am, but it has changed my perspectives on many things. Because of Greek life, I have come to fully understand the phrase, “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” I have met a lot of people who are now my good friends, who I might not have met otherwise.
Over the years Greek life has introduced me to many people, whom I know will help me as I look for a job in the coming year.
Greek life has been an amazing experience for me, and I encourage everyone to go through sorority and fraternity recruitment.
